24 BEST MOVIES OF 2024

 By José Alberto Hermosillo

The 2024 selected projects are films that inspire, uplift, and elevate the human spirit through self-motivation, struggle, and, most importantly, redemption.

Who would have imagined that the most inspiring movie of 2024 would focus on Donald Trump’s early years? “The Apprentice,” directed by an Iranian filmmaker based in Denmark, Ali Abbasi. He surprised audiences with his previous two films, “Border” and “Holy Spider.” The director continues to showcase his extraordinary talent in this biopic, delivering a well-crafted and well-acted period piece about the President of the United States and his ascent to power. This movie is genuinely inspiring and uplifting.

In the stunning Robbie Williams biopic musical drama “Better Man,” directed by Michael Gracey (known for “The Greatest Showman” and “Rocketman”), AI-generated special effects replicate human gestures and the singer’s facial expressions on a chimpanzee’s face to perfection, adding new and diverse layers of meaning to the film. After the first five uncomfortable minutes, it brought me to tears.

“September 5” provides a new perspective on the kidnapping and murder of Israeli athletes at the Olympic Village during the 1972 Olympic Games in Berlin. The narrative aligns with other notable works about this tragic event, including the acclaimed 1999 documentary “One Day in September,” narrated by Michael Douglas, and the 2005 historical drama “Munich.” “September 5” emphasizes how a team of professional sports journalists, rather than traditional news reporters, had to improvise and navigate technological and television-network challenges in a foreign country to deliver the most comprehensive coverage during those difficult times.

“Conclave” is an exceptional film about the election of a new Pope. In addition to the outstanding acting, cinematography, and set design, the well-crafted script highlights how humans are divided by their kind, nationalities, race, and backgrounds, even in the holy land, where everyone aligns with their own.

The controversial French musical “Emilia Pérez” centers on a Mexican drug lord who decides to transition into a woman, leaving behind his children and wife. In turn, the wife becomes romantically involved with another younger and pretentious drug lord. More than just a backdrop, the gripping love triangle immerses the characters in self-destruction, loneliness, and abuse. The wasted potential of the players’ lives will resonate with a more open-minded generation in the near future.

The remaining films are my favorites and the ones I consider The Best Movies of 2024:

TWENTY BEST MOVIES OF 2020

By José Alberto Hermosillo

http://www.festivalinla.com/2021/01/twenty-best-movies-of-2020.html

2020 will be memorable because movie theaters closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and audiences had no choice but to watch movies at home.

Watching movies on the big screen was a fundamental part of the cinematic experience. Now, viewers enjoy those magnificent films on their laptops, tablets, and cellphones – the lucky ones watch movies in their home theaters and big-screen TVs.

Some avid movie-watchers on the big screen struggled with technology but still adapted to the “New Normal.”

First Cow is the best movie of 2020

A couple of years ago, Academy members and even film festivals despised online streaming services for attempting to remove the movie experience and business from movie theaters. “Roma,” distributed by Netflix, was the most notorious case of discernment between studios and streaming services. Netflix withdrew the Mexican black-and-white epic from Cannes, and Academy members rejected it as the rightful Best Picture winner that year.

Last year, the winning of “Parasite” opened the door for other independent and foreign films to have the possibility to seize a nomination in different categories, including Best Picture.

We are learning that we don’t need the Hollywood studios’ “star system” to value good films. Everything becomes questionable because now it is more challenging to grab the viewers’ and voting members’ attention. The “dance of the millions of dollars” used during the award season has been reimagined.

Unfortunately, studios postponed quality films that could raise the bar this season. We have to wait for the next best thing, next year, and for all of those blockbusters to come out, such as “Dune,” “Elvis,” “The Matrix 4,” “West Side Story,” “In the Heights,” “Old,” and “No Time to Die,” to compete in the 2022 campaign.

To select the best films, we must set aside our classic “Hollywood State of Mind,” which alters objectivity. I measure a movie by its story, direction, strength of script, and acting.

If you have not seen any of these terrific films, it is about time you start catching up.
