Festival in LA. Has selected the Best Posters of 2018 to promote the talent of the most prestigious festivals worldwide.

Art is subjective and open to interpretation. How do we curate, criticize, and deconstruct an artistic piece?

While taking art classes in college, the day I hated the most was “Critique Day.” I remember that experience with aversion, stress, and anxiety. Who likes to be orally evaluated by a strict teacher and other fellow students in front of a class?

At that time, I only wanted to forget the grade and never return to school. But I also felt the enormous necessity of showing my work to the class or having the satisfaction of finishing it with the possibility of improving it and getting a good grade. So, I had to swallow my pride, eat the humble pie, and deal with it.

A few years later, I highly valued those good old days in college.

Back to the posters, the elements to consider in the composition are the conceptual idea, technical skills, simplicity, diversity, beauty, colors, emotions, and message.

The most crucial element is the genre. The artist must stick to the genre, whether the work is Abstract, Impressionist, Surrealist, Cubist, Modernist, Contemporary, Pop, Classic, Art déco, or Avant-garde.

The style, shapes, graphics, forms, fonts, and colors complement each other. Remember, the poster has to have a limited palette of five colors.

ALL THE CREATURES WERE STIRRING: WISHES YOU A BLOODY MERRY CHRISTMAS

By José Alberto Hermosillo

“All the Creatures Were Stirring” is a very Lynchian movie with some touches of good humor and plenty of scary moments.

Seasonal vignettes were well-combined and smartly put together by a group of remarkable filmmakers, plus exceptional performers.

When a blind date goes wrong, the atmosphere of this tiny, little creepy theater plays a series of obscure and bizarre tales by a group of funky performers.

From the beginning, the couple’s interaction with the workers and patrons is awkwardly funny.

A mute presenter introduces every story when they sit to enjoy the show. She has the look of a character in David Lynch’s movies.

The stories are rich and fascinating. It begins with a mind-numbing Christmas office party that turns into a bloody Russian roulette game.

A late-shopping madness ends up in a psycho “Chupacabras” eating people in the parking lot. A not-so-good neighbor’s experience transforms into a twisted version of Charles Dickens’s “Christmas Carol.” A dead deer avenges itself. Finally, a surreal extraterrestrial adventure at a friend’s dinner table gives closeness and hope to another couple.

“All the Creatures Were Stirring” is a creepy, weird, and even frightening anthology, and at the same time, it is fun to watch.

This independent horror flick is reminiscent of the TV Series “Tales from the Crypt.” A show from the 1980’s that I loved as a teen.

The cast and crew were present at the movie premiere in La Vista Theater of Hollywood.

The cast includes Amanda Fuller (“Last Man Standing”), Jonathan Kite (“2 Broke Girls”), Ashley Clements (“The Lizzie Bennet Diaries”), Graham Skipper (“The Mind’s Eye”), Stephanie Drake (“Mad Men”), Megan Duffy (“Maniac”), Mark Kelly (“Fear the Walking Dead”), Michelle DeFraites (“The Quad”), Brea Grant (“The Arrangement”), Diva Zappa (Pledge This!).

BERNARDO BERTOLUCCI ICONIC DIRECTOR OF WORLD CINEMA DIES AT 77

By José Alberto Hermosillo

Academy Award-winning director Bernardo Bertolucci died in his house in Rome this Monday, November 26th, 2018, a victim of cancer at the age of 77.
Bernardo Bertolucci and Pier Paolo Pasolini, Italy.

Named one of our time’s most influential film directors, Bertolucci began his career as an assistant director to another of the greatest Italian directors, Pier Paolo Pasolini, on the film “Accattone” in 1961.

His directorial debut was the critically acclaimed “La Commare Secca.” At 22, the Italian director entered the international arena with his elegant style of filmmaking in the film “Before the Revolution.” A movie that granted global outreach.

In 1970, the Italian auteur began his long collaboration with cinematographer Vittorio Storaro on the visually arresting “Il conformista/The Conformist.” Together they made “The Last Tango in Paris,” “1900,” and many more.

With “The Last Emperor,” Bertolucci won two Oscars, one for Best Director and another for Best Screenplay Adaptation. The stylish period film, shot in China, won nine statuettes, including Best Picture, in 1987.

In 2011, he was awarded an honorary Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival. In France, he was nominated for the César Award for Best Director for “The Last Tango in Paris” and won for “The Last Emperor.”

In his home country, Bertolucci was nominated for the David di Donatello Award for his last narrative feature, “Io e te/Me and you,” in 2013. In 2003, he made “Dreamers,” in which he continued to address his favorite subjects: “sex and politics.”

“Besieged,” “Stealing Beauty,” and “Little Buddha” were three relevant works he made in Hollywood during the 1990s.

In 2013, he was honored with a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

The AFI FEST (American Film Institute) presented a new print of “The Last Emperor” in 3 the same year. He introduced the film at the legendary Chinese Theater in Hollywood. Before the event, we had a very brief conversation. A fabulous memory that lasts a lifetime for a movie fan like me.
