BAFTA Awards Nominations “Roma” Seven - “The Favourite” Leads with Twelve

BAFTA AWARDS
BAFTA, The British Academy of Film and Television Arts, unveils its nominations. Netflix and the producers of the Mexican film “Roma” couldn’t be any happier to have an unprecedented seven nods to the prestigious BAFTA awards for a black & white movie, in Spanish and Mixteco, without movie stars. Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos’ “The Favourite” leads with twelve.

British director Steve McQueen’s “Widows” got only one: Viola Davis, Best Leading Actress. British production “Mary Queen of Scots” got three: Supporting Actress Margot Robbie, Costume Design, and Makeup & Hair.

The British historical comedy “The Favourite” has the most, twelve including four individual nominations for its director Yorgos Lanthimos.

Mexican director Alfonso Cuarón also has six personal nominations including Best Director, Best Editing, Cinematography, Original Screenplay, Best Film, and Best Film Not in English Language (foreign). Also, the Oscar winner Emilio Caballero and Bárbara Enríquez have a Best Production Design nod. That makes a total of seven for Roma.

The American “musical” “A Star is Born” has seven nominations including five personal nominations for Bradley Cooper: Best Film, Director, Actor, Original Music, and Screenplay Adaptation.

Polish international sensation “Cold War” has four nominations, including three personal nods for its director Pawel Pawlikowski (“Ida”).

Paradoxically, the British awards have no British directors nominated for Best Director. This year they chose: Pawel Pawlikowski from Poland, Yorgos Lanthimos from Greece, Alfonso Cuarón from Mexico, and two Americans, Bradley Cooper for “A Star is Born” and Spike Lee for “BlacKkKlansman.”

“I Am Not a Witch” is the United Kingdom Selection for the 91st Academy Awards®

The United Kingdom has selected “I Am Not a Witch” to compete at the 91st Academy Awards® for Best Foreign Language Film.

The most celebrated British film of the year premiered at the Director’s Fortnight section of the 2017 Cannes Film Festival. 

 The team, integrated by the director Rungano Nyoni and the producer Emili Morgan, won the BAFTA Award for Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director, or Producer.

In “I Am Not a Witch,” people speak Bemba, the language of Northern Zambia. The film opened in the U.K. last October, which is the two most essential elements for qualifying for Best Foreign Language Film. It also began to show in Europe and other territories.    

The striking cinematography and the originality of the story have earned it a 100% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes from critics and film specialists.


The highly-praised flick recounts the tale of Shula, an eight-year-old Zambian girl accused of witchcraft. After her trial, she is sent to a witch camp in the desert. During a ritual of initiation, Shula is instructed to follow the rules; otherwise, she will become a goat.

Other productions shot in Africa with similar storylines are the Oscar-nominated film “War Witch” from Canada, the Mauritanian-French coproduction “Timbuktu,” and the Netflix creation “Beast of No Nation.”

Many British productions have won an Oscar® for Best Picture, including “A Bridge on the River Kwai” (1957), “Laurence of Arabia” (1962), “Gandhi” (1982), and “The King’s Speech” (2010). However, the United Kingdom has never won an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film.

 The United Kingdom submitted a film in the Foreign Language category for the first time in 1991. Since then, they had two Oscar nominations, the 1992 biopic “Hedd Wyn” and the 1999 “Solomon & Gaenor.”

Rungano Nyoni is a new visionary woman director. In her beautifully crafted first film, “I Am Not a Witch,” she made a remarkable study of millennial African cultures and their influence on modern-day society.

The Tales of Hoffmann: The Operatic Masterpiece of British Cinema Restored

“The Tales of Hoffmann” is the most beautiful, elegant, harmonious, and breathtaking opera ever filmed.

The allegorical Technicolor film was directed by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger (“The Red Shoes,” “Black Narcissus”). It is now available on a new, marvelous 4K restoration by Warner Brothers, Martin Scorsese, and London Films.

The intricate narrative resembles a Shakespearean dramaturgy, with surrealist elements characteristic of the 1950s films. The story is told from Mr. Hoffmann’s (Robert Rounseville) perspective.
 
The magnificent overture serves as a prologue featuring the Dragonfly ballet’s stunning performance, in which Stella, the prima ballerina, sends a message before her number. Hoffmann, infatuated, watches from the audience. Meanwhile, backstage, the message is intercepted by Lindorf’s evil force.
 
Inside the surreal Luther’s Tavern, Hoffmann, melancholic, drowns his sorrows and sings the three tales of the women he loved.

The first tale is about Olympia, the doll from Paris. The puppeteers want to sell Olympia to Hoffmann, who falls deeply in love with her, especially when she sings the “Doll Song.” The dark forces prepare to destroy the doll and true love. The decor and artwork are from the modernist movement, dating to before the Eiffel Tower was built, creating a sophisticated, enigmatic atmosphere and setting the mood for tragedy.

The second tale is about his relationship with Giulietta, the Venetian courtesan manipulated by Dapperdutto; she’s taking possession of Hoffmann’s soul through a mirror. He has to reclaim his identity and his love for her, but it won’t be easy. Jealousy, madness, and revenge are significant factors in this unbelievable episode.

The third tale is about Antonia, the poet from a Greek island. Her mother died of tuberculosis, and her mad father keeps his daughter in seclusion. She is ill and can no longer sing. Her mother’s spirit and the doctor persuaded her to follow her heart, but it was too late for a tragic outcome.

The Epilogue, or the grand finale, takes place inside the Opera House. Stella’s Ballet intercuts with the tavern, where Hoffmann had captivated the audience, who now understand the meaning of the three stories.

The non-intrusive camera, by the master of British Technicolor cinematography, photographer Christopher Challis, captures every moment from many angles - from the audience’s point of view, backstage, and from the balcony. The camera is everywhere, so the viewer doesn’t miss any detail of the artistic composition.

“The Tales of Hoffmann” is a jewel of British cinema, now restored for film and opera lovers worldwide. A must-see!
